The Colombard is one of the most often planted white wine grapes in California. This highly productive grape from France (therefore also called French Colombard) has expanded rapidly because of its ability to thrive in the hot weather of the central California valley and still produce a very drinkable, pleasant tasting wine.
The result is a Colombard produces a crisp, moderately dry, spicy wine that is only slightly acid with a lovely scent of flowers. Because of its smooth taste and low levels of acidity it is often blended as a base for Chenin Blanc, jug wines and less expensive sparkling wines.
