    How to Use a Gwurtztraminer with Game

    As far as ampelography (the description of vines) is concerned, Traminer and Gewuerztraminer are one and the same variety. Gewurtztraminer (what a mouthful) or Traminer is a distinct varietal wine from Alsace [France]. It is also grown in Germany, Austria and in California [USA]. . It is an aromatic wine and one of the more memorable varieties with its pungent, spicy, floral fragrances. Traminer is an early drinking wine with a crisp acid finish. It is usually preferred with fish but goes well with most pork, chicken, veal, turkey and most white meat game game.

    History and Characteristics

    Traminer can be found in Napa, the Hunter Valley and MIA regions of New South Wales and the Coonawarra and Barossa Valley of South Australia. The distinct differences in maturity and bouquet are obviously based on slight variations whithin one variety. In the Ortenau district. Traminer is also called Clevner. Those wine connoisseurs who favour the fragrant wines are enthusiastic about Gewuerztraminer.

    Gwertztraminer is a very distinctive wine with intense floral scents of violets, rose, lavender and perfume are common and may well be overpowering to some. Lychee, lime, passionfruit and tropical notes will show through in warmer climates. This variety has a crisp acid finish and presents very clean to the palate

    It has been widely cloned in Australia which has resulted in marked variations depending on the particular clone. The clones with the pink to red berries are more aromatic.
