Tactical Use of the Longbow
The Longbow was one of the great weapons of history. Yhe weapon had long range and great penetrating power and was capable of rapid fire. It exacted crushing victories over the French in the 100 years war in the battles of Crecy and Poitiers and over the Scots at Sterling Bridge. However, it was essentially a defensive weapon. The enemy had to come to it. The unarmored archer was extremely vulnerable to attacks on is flanks and had to be protected by terrain or armored horsemen or footsoldiers. Ts was dramatically shown by the battles of Palay, Formigny and Castillion where the fought unprotected by Stakes, Ditches, Woods or Trenches that would protect them from cavalry. However, when properly used, each archer carrying up to 60 arrows, their effect would be devastating. Sixty arrows carried by 5,000 archers meant an arrow storm of up to 300,000 arrows.
