The recurve bow was the all important weapon of the Mongols. It was so important that they forbade the practice of archery in any of the lands they conquered. The practice of horse archery was punishable by death.
The Mongols had three favorite methods of battle. The first was fashioned after "The Great Hunt". Every year the Mongols would gather for a hunt. The army was formed up into a double line in a semicircular pattern with the flanks arching forward at the ends. As they advanced, the end would draw closer and closer to a circle trapping all animals within.
The use of the word "all" is deliberate. No animal was allowed to escape. No animal could be killed until the flanks met and the animals within were completely trapped and the Khan gave the signal by killing one of the more dangerous beasts himself. If a rabbit dashed through the line, it was a disgrace to the horsemen and had to be caught and brought back. If a bear went to lair, a man had to go into the den and bring it out - without harming the bear.
The second method of attack employed the "standard sweep". In battle, a picked band of reserves was held back behind the outwardly curving center. When the enemy was fully engaged, the reserve made a sweep around the most open flank and took the enemy from the flank or rear.
The third order of battle was the use of the "Magudai" or feigned retreat. A suicide force of Mongols would attack a vastly superior enemy and provoke it to charge. The Magudai would then flee, with the enemy in pursuit and lead them for a mile or two to a place between two lines of archers. After the archers had done their work, the Mongol heavy cavalry would move in and destroy the remnants of the enemy force.
This tactic is very similar to the tactic the Greeks used to defeat the Persians at Marathon. It worked particularly well against the heavily armored Russian and European Knights who were helpless in their heavy armor when their horses were shot out from under them.
All of these tactic were supported by a superb signaling corp that uses fire arrows of different colors to communicate the surse of the battle and the positions of the enemy.
Napoleon said the power of an army was "its mass times it speed of maneuver". If that is true, and most military men accept it as fact, the Mongols were the true forefathers of the "blitzkrieg".
