Trout

Description

Trout are the great freshwater sporting fish of the world. They are members of the Salmon family and they are, like Salmon, often androgynous - that is, they will go from streams out into salt or brackish water for feed for more prevalent bait.

Trout are not a tropical fish. They prefer the cooler waters and streams and will survive even in the cold temperatures of Canada and Europe. Their primary foods in freshwater are insects and minnows. When they go fourth into salt water, they will consume quantities of bait fish. A freshwater trout will generally range from two to four pounds.

Trout that have gone to salt water can range to eight pounds or twice the weight of their fresh water contemporaries. Like Salmon, they will always return to freshwater to breed. Because of their popularity as a sport fish their populations are often not self sustaining and the waters are often stocked by government fisheries, Because of their predilection for insects, the best bait is a wet or dry flies. Freshwater Trout tend to stay close to shore where they capture the insects that fall off the trees. Trout are a superb eating fish. Their flesh is white, sweet and flaky with a delicious flavor. It can be eaten sauteed, grilled, baked and is often smoked.
