Albacore Tuna (Alosa sapidissima)

Size: 5 - 12 lbs., can reach up to 90 lbs.

Habitat:

Atuna are of the herring family. The Albacore is considered the prize eating tuna. They are a cool/cold water fish that is found in both the northern and southern hemispheres almost always in schools following warm ocean currents in water well offshore.

Qualities: Albacore are the best eating or any of the tuna and are prized as a fighting fish. The best bait to use are Fish flesh, mackerel and small herring. They will strike at a wide variety of lures.

Albacore are usually caught by trolling but where schools are spotted, chumming is very productive. Use a light to medium gear for trolling and bait fishing. Drift fishing is usually not as productive because the fish are fast movers from one location to another in search of food.
