As most people know, the whale is a mammal. In fact, it is the largest mammal on earth. It just lives in the water and it must come to the surface to breathe. Before it took to the water to live it was a four legged land animal.

Wales are of the order Cetacea which has 79 species, including dolphins, porpoises and Killer whales (orcas).

Whales look like fish but their tails are horizontal, not vertical and they must come to the surface to breathe through an opening in the top of its head.

There are to major groups of whales. These are:

Toothed whales like Sperm Whales, Orcas, Porpoises and Dolphins. The eat other fish and squid after they locate them by using whale sonar.

The larger baleen whales eat plankton which they capture by sieving them through baleen plates in their mouths.
